Bitcoin can be termed in many ways as the mother of all cryptocurrencies. The largest cryptocurrency has for the past decade dominated the entire crypto market currently having dominance of 55.8%. Thus, it is not a surprise that many have come up claiming to be the founders and developers of bitcoin. The inventor of the coin still remains a mystery referred to as Satoshi Nakamoto.
Here are various people who have been called or claimed to be Satoshi Nakamoto over the years.
The cypherpunk who is also a 1990s proponent of digital currency is thought to be Satoshi Nakamoto. He came up with a B-money proposal which many see as a precursor idea to Bitcoin. Some think that a mysterious group of people is responsible for Bitcoin.
In the case of Shakespeare, some think that several intellectuals joined hands to deliver works associated with the identity. Many people also think that it is the same case that happened to most popular digital token, Bitcoin. Then again, other individuals in the crypto community think that we are all Satoshi Nakamotos.
A blogger, Skye Grey, connected Nick Szabo to the BTC white paper. Szabo, an experienced decentralized currency philosopher, published ‘bit gold’ with most terming it a precursor to Bitcoin. However, it has nothing to do with the recently launched BitGold. Szabo denied being Nakamoto even though ‘the most convincing evidence’ as per Nathaniel Popper of the New York Times pointed to him.
Nash is thought to have heavily influenced Bitcoin. The great mathematician of the 20th century is famous for his game theory work. He struggled with mental illnesses but overcame them to win the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1994. He wrote about his distaste for Keynesian economics just like many bitcoiners making people believe that he is Satoshi Nakamoto.
The New Yorker claimed that Vili, a Finnish economist, could be Satoshi Nakamoto. Vili denied being the inventor of bitcoin.
The Chinese citizen filed an application on May 24 to the US Copyright Office. She officially informed the world that she is the one who allegedly invented bitcoin. Wei claimed using the name Satoshi Nakamoto in 2008 to write ‘Bitcoin’. In the official application, she called it a Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System and explained that she published it on the web as a text file.
Today, there is hardly any information about the identity of the person. But, a woman by the same name was the ‘right hand’ of the Bitbox exchange co-founder, Wanlin Wang, in 2018. Wang sued Wei Liu saying that she claimed to be the company’s only shareholder trying to steal about $3 million.
Whoever the real Satoshi Nakamoto is, only time will tell. For now, all there is to do is wait and see while speculating about the future of the crypto market.
This Nakamoto is the most famous mistaken identity. In March 2014, Leah McGrath published an article pointing to a Japanese living in California. The man used his name and circumstantial evidence as proof of his participation in the Bitcoin project. Nakamoto worked as a systems engineer on defense projects and many other projects.
According to his daughter, Nakamoto is a libertarian. Reports revealed that Dorian stated that he no longer involved himself with the bitcoin project and he had already turned it over to other people. The report was later confirmed by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. In a later interview, Dorian denied any connection to Bitcoin. Many bitcoiners donated to compensate him for his inconvenience.
Hal was in many ways a hero to the whole Bitcoin community. He ran the first bitcoin node after Satoshi Nakamoto. He supplied bug reports and assisted in making improvements. People thought that he is the real Nakamoto. Forbes uncovered that Finney lived near Dorian Nakamoto. Many believe that his writing is the closest that they have come across to that of Satoshi Nakamoto.
The New Yorker also alleged Clear could be Satoshi. The Trinity College graduate ranked as the top computer-science undergraduate at the institution in 2008. He worked for Allied Irish Banks on the currency-trading software project. Moreover, he co-authored an academic paper on peer-to-peer technology. He denied being Satoshi Nakamoto.
Neal King and Others
A suggestion that Neal King, Vladimir Oksam, and Charles Bry are possible inventors of Bitcoin was published. The publication cited their encryption patent application on August 15, 2008, just 72 hours before the registration of the bitcoin.org domain. According to their patent, they described networking and encryption protocols comparable to Bitcoin.
The phrase “computationally impractical to reverse” appears in both the Bitcoin white paper and the patent application.
Ted Nelson stated in 2013 that a Japanese mathematician is Satoshi claims that he denied.
Latest reports showed that the controversial crypto proponent Craig Steve Wright got copyright registrations for the original Bitcoin Whitepaper. The United States Copyright Office granted him these copyrights. After the news broke, many thought that he is indeed Satoshi Nakamoto.
However, a majority of the crypto community did not move after these Wright allegations. Since 2015, the creator of the Bitcoin SV token that forked from Bitcoin in November 2018 has claimed to be the real Satoshi Nakamoto. Up until now, however, he has not provided any conclusive evidence of his claim to be the real bitcoin inventor.
