Gordon Goner, the pseudonymous co-founder of Yuga Labs, has issued a cautionary alarm about a possible incoming phishing attack after receiving intelligence reports that an insider from Twitter would help scammers bypass the security of its social media accounts.
The high alert warning appears just a few days after scammers conducted a similar malicious phishing attack. Hackers exploited the vulnerability of Instagram’s manager accounts of Yuga Lab’s Bored Apes Yacht Club (BAYC) and stole more than $357,000 worth of NFT.
Yuga Labs, the home of the most popular non-fungible tokens (NFTs), including Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) and Otherside Metaverse, has proactively approached Twitter for security after receiving exclusive intelligence reports about the orchestrated attack on social media accounts.
Yuga Labs and Twitter officials are actively monitoring any suspicious activity on its social media accounts to fortify the existing security. In the meantime, Goner has informed all investors that his company will never conduct surprise mint, famous trick attackers use to lure victims.
Notably, the rise in popularity and demand of Yuga Labs NFT offerings has attracted the rising of Ape-themed scams. On June 5, 2022, hackers exploited the vulnerability in Yuga Labs BAYC and Otherside Discord groups and stole over 145 Ether (ETH).
According to Peck Shield, a blockchain security firm, scammers breached Bored Apes Yacht Club’s Instagram managers account and sent phishing links to members using Boris Vagner’s username, the community, and social media manager at Yuga Labs, username.
In the past few months, the Optimism layer-2 scaling solution has suffered a loss of 20 million OP tokens after falling victim to an exploit in its market’s smart contract. During the event, more than one million tokens worth $1.3 million were sold off while more than one million valued at about $730,000 moved to Vitalik Buterin’s Ethereum address on Optimism.
The remaining 18 million tokens remain dormant and can be used to sway governance decisions.
