Previously, Mark Cuban was a major bitcoin and crypto critic. However, he recently changed his tune and now appears bullish especially on Dogecoin (DOGE). After just three days of accepting DOGE as a form of payment, the Dallas Mavericks owner Cuban is projecting the price of the crypto to eventually hit $1.
In a March 6 tweet, Cuban said customers had already used over 20,000 DOGE which translates to around $1,018 at the time of writing, in transactions for the Dallas Mavericks. He also alleged that the franchise was now “the largest Dogecoin merchant in the world.”
The billionaire also projected that in case basketball fans were to acquire 6,556,000,000 DOGE worth of Mavericks merchandise, the price of this token would ‘definitely reach $1.’
The @dallasmavs have done more than 20,000 #Dogecoin in transactions, making us the LARGEST #DOGECOIN MERCHANT IN THE WORLD ! We thank all of you and can only say that if we sell another 6,556,000,000 #DOGECOIN worth of Mavs merch, #dogecoin will DEFINITELY HIT $1 !!!🚀🚀🚀

The Mavericks were among the first NBA franchises to recognize cryptocurrency as a type of payment for merchandise and tickets, have begun accepting bitcoin via wallet company BitPay about two years ago. Currently, the Mavericks fans can also pay for souvenirs and gear with USD Coin (USDC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Binance USD (BUSD), Paxos Standard (PAX), and Gemini Dollar (GUSD).
Despite starting as a joke, DOGE has managed to surge in the past few months as several billionaires, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Cuban have highlighted the token on social media.
Musk’s tweets are suspected to have contributed to the rise in the DOGE price from $0.01 in January to an all-time high of $0.078. at the time of writing, Dogecoin is hovering around $0.0509, which means that the token would have to gain 1,864% to reach $1.
The Dallas Mavericks owner has in the past described DOGE as an ‘economics teaching tool’ adding that this token was the “best entertainment bang for your buck available” on the cryptocurrency space.
Even with the surge in DOGE payments for the basketball franchise, Cuban stated that he was still “having fun” and is yet to change his opinions about the token.
