Ross Ulbricht is the founder of Silk Road, a darknet market. His story is coming to the big screens in 2021 after an announcement from major entertainment firm Lionsgate. This film will supposedly focus on what led to Ross’s arrest as the founder of the darknet marketplace.
Based on Deadline, Lionsgate has acquired the rights to the Silk Road movie. The entertainment company said that it plans to release the feature in theaters and online starting on February 19. The film is inspired by the 2014 Rolling Stone article Dead End on Silk Road.
Reports reveal that this film will focus on the lead up to Ulbricht’s arrest as the founder of that marketplace. Nick Robinson who is a 25-year-old American actor from Jurassic World, will portray Ulbricht. Ross is currently serving two life sentences in federal prison. He was convicted of money laundering, conspiracy to traffic narcotics, and computer hacking.
This story has already appeared in mainstream media on many occasions. In November, CBS even aired a documentary about this takedown of the Silk Road dark web marketplace comprising of an interview with Ulbricht’s ex-girlfriend. Originally, the Silk Road movie was expected to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in April. However, the event was canceled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Back in 2013, the Silk Road founder was apprehended by the FBI and will spend the rest of his life in prison without parole. Ross still offers occasional sentiments and analyses on the BTC market on his medium blog from the U.S. Penitentiary in Tucson.
